F1: Vettel fastest in red flagged final practice

Sebastian Vettel set the pace in final Formula 1 practice for the Canadian Grand Prix in a session that ended early when Kevin Magnussen crashed.

The Ferrari driver clocked a 1m13.919s on the ultra-softs to finish 0.239s clear of Max Verstappen, who also did his lap time on the purple-sidewall tires.

Reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton, who dominated Friday practice, failed to get a qualifying-simulation in before light rain fell with 20 minutes to go. The Briton locked up and ran wide at Turn 1, just as the rain started to fall, and ended the session fifth quickest. His Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg and Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen were only a fraction quicker in third and fourth, respectively.

The session was red-flagged with 13 minutes to go when Magnussen hit the wall on the exit of Turn 7, with damage to the wall being reported afterward. Replays showed the Dane wasn’t pushing but the rear-end snapped as he got on throttle, pitching him into the wall.

Renault now faces a race against time to rebuild the car, which suffered significant damage, in time for qualifying later on Saturday.

With the teams’ weather radars predicting rain late in the session, there was a flurry of activity early on. Most did their initial running on the ultra-softs but Red Bull chose to run the super-softs and set the early pace. Then Vettel moved to the top of the times with a 1m14.139s on the ultra-softs with his second lap of that run just 0.071s slower.

Ricciardo was sixth quickest ahead of Carlos Sainz Jr and Fernando Alonso, the latter of which was the only driver in the top 10 to do his best lap on the super-soft. Sergio Perez and Felipe Massa closed out the top 10.

Jenson Button continued with the Monaco-spec internal combustion engine that he moved to on Friday after an oil leak in practice because Honda was still investigating the problem.
