Haas is to run a new rear wing in the Spanish Grand Prix as it continues to build on its impressive debut season in Formula 1.
The American team currently lies fifth in the constructors’ standings, and with most teams expected to bring several updates to Barcelona, Haas says it will do the same.
“We have a new rear wing for Spain,” confirmed team principal Gunther Steiner. “It will provide us with a little bit more downforce. For Spain and Monte Carlo we need a little bit more rear downforce. It’s just to adapt to the track layouts which are coming in the near future.”
For Haas, the new front wing deployed on both cars for the race in Russia proved to be a success.
“Both drivers liked it better,” added Steiner. “Maybe it wasn’t the ideal circuit to test it, but it is what we wanted, and the wing was OK. There was no overall gain in terms of load. It wasn’t three or four points more. It was about driveability.
“That is very subjective for drivers, but they thought it more stable, that there was a gain around the corners.”
Just over two months on since the completion of pre-season testing in Barcelona, Steiner concedes Haas is “a lot better now” compared to early March, and the team is looking forward to returning to a track is has experience of running at.
“For us it’s quite a good thing,” said Steiner. “We can go to Spain and look at the data we had from the test and compare it and see if we’ve gone wrong somewhere. We are still in the ballpark because the car felt good, but it’s the first track we have been on that we have data.
“On all the other tracks, we’ve got no data at all, and we’ll have no data at all until we come back next year. So it’s always nice to go back to Barcelona and compare what we had before.”
